Quilting Kits
Quilting is one of the word's oldest textile traditions, dating back thousands of years. The earliest quilted garments were used for warmth and protection, with fragments found as far back as ancient Egypt and China. By the Middle Ages, quilted padding was stitched into clothing and amour for extra strength and warmth.
Patchwork is at the heart of quilting, a timeless craft that brings together small pieces of fabric to create something far greater than the sum of its parts. For centuries, quilters have pieced together fabrics - whether from worn garments, treasured fabrics, or newly cut cotton - to form patterns rich with colour and meaning.
The hexagon is one of the most beloved shapes in quilting, often referred to as 'Grandmother's Flower Garden". Traditionally, quilters made hexagons by hand using scraps of fabric giving new life to worn-out clothing and leftover material. This thrifty and creative practice became especially popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, with English paper piecing techniques bringing precision to the shape. Hexagons remain a favourite today because they can be cut from almost any cotton fabric and easily stitched together by hand or machine. Their interlocking pattern creates endless design possibilities, from flowers to honeycomb motifs, making them both practical and decorative. Quilters still love the meditative rhythm of piecing hexagons, a tradition passed down through generations.
